Down River
This wall at the BJI Pottery studio needed some character. The mural depicts a serene Canadian scene: a graceful tree alongside a gently rolling river, with soft hills in the background and butterflies dancing above the riverbank. I wanted flowing lines for a dynamic sense of movement and fresh air, even in the sky (a gentle daytime homage to Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night).
The unique angle of the sun flares may appear unconventional when viewed straight on, but this design is intentionally crafted for the potter's perspective at her wheel. From her vantage point, the sun casts a warm glow directly onto her workspace, while the butterflies seem to flutter toward her, creating an inviting and inspiring atmosphere for creativity. This mural is painted with acrylics, 8 feet tall and 6.5 feet wide. It's packed with more tiny details than most mural projects, but the meticulous work was a joy and well worth it for the love the work continues to receive.
