Flower Children
The handpainted mural on the traffic signal box at Dupont and Huron Street is a vibrant testament to the transformative power of art in the community. Commissioned by the City of Toronto as part of the StART Outside The Box program, it turns a dull grey box into a lively celebration of childhood innocence and the joys of nature.
Situated next to several benches in a little parkette on an otherwise busy street, the mural acts as a focal point for community interaction.
The whimsical perspective of the large daisies overhead evokes how small we all are and invites us to embrace our spirit of innocent joy at any age. For the children who pass by, I hope it conveys to them that they matter, they belong and have an important place in the city.
Several of the children who came up to watch me paint were particularly taken by the bunny rabbit, and one little girl was tripping over herself with excitement to tell me that she had recently seen a bunny in her own back yard! I know I'm on the right track when I can see people making personal connections to my art.
