I was commissioned to repaint this old blanket box which has been in the client's family for decades. She requested a design with birds and flowers, and we started discussing her favourite birds and favourite flowers. She listed cardinals, orioles and blue jays, roses, irises and daffodils, and mentioned that in her imagination, in heaven all the seasonal flowers are in bloom at the same time. So that became the theme for the box! I added in whimsical clouds and rainbows to create a heavenly garden scene. Painting such tiny details was quite a challenge compared to the larger scale works that I usually paint, but I took my time and put a lot of love into bringing this old box back to life.
